Animal Kingdom Release First Single From New Album

2/1/2012

Atmospheric indie band Animal Kingdom has released “Strange Attractor,” the first single off of its upcoming sophomore LP for Mom + Pop imprint Boombox. As of now, the band hasn’t released a title for the new album, which was produced by Worlds End producer client David Kosten.

Animal Kingdom spent the writing and rehearsal process in an old church in London, which fits with the beautiful grandiosity of its new single. “Strange Attractor” sees the band continuing to perfect its sonic wave rock coupled with Richard Sauberlich’s soaring vocals.

The Darkness Release New Single

2/1/2012

The Darkness have just released their first new material in seven years, in the form of single "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us" which is not, thankfully, a cover of the Starship song.

It is however, and probably goes without saying, a rocker and reasonably restrained, at least compared to The Darkness' second album. And pretty good! You can download the single for free at the band's website and watch its cool, animated video at the bottom of this post.

- Brooklyn Vegan

"Nothing's Gonna Stop Us" was mixed by Chris "Frenchie" Smith

Quiet Company Album #1 on Austin's CultureMap.com

1/19/2012

Quiet Company - 'We Are All Where We Belong'

At a time when Austin bands seem to largely eschew rock and roll ambition in favor of more stripped-down, minimalist, garage-rock pastiche, Quiet Company swung for the fences in making the year’s biggest, most anthemic rock album – and succeeded in making it the best of the year, as well. Packed with heavy religious themes — the album roughly sounds like a soundtrack to losing one’s faith – as well as sly, nerdy in-jokes (astute listeners will catch the Batman and Star Wars references in the song titles), We Are All Where We Belong is a powerhouse concept album. The song titles are stuffed with exclamation points; one of the record’s signature tracks, “Preaching To The Choir Invisible,” is divided into two parts; and Muse’s voice, which sounds like a mix of Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws and Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum, sings unabashedly about the big ideas he’s packed into this record. Quiet Company’s ambition pays off huge on We Are All Where We Belong, and in a year where most artists were content not to aim particularly high, it makes this album a clear standout.

- Dan Solomon

'Where Are All Where We Belong' was mixed by TIM PALMER.

Trail of Dead Make Allan Raible’s Best Albums of 2011

1/9/2012

#4 ...AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD – “TAO OF THE DEAD” (DELUXE EDITION)

…Trail of Dead aren’t anywhere near as scary as their name might have you believe. In fact, the veteran Austin, Texas band continues to raise the bar on their latest album, “Tao Of The Dead.” Members, Conrad Keeley and Jason Reece know their way around a catchy pop tune and yet they often make it as hard and as rocking as they can. Elements of psychedelia and prog-rock keep things interesting. I recommend the deluxe 2-disc edition of the record, which includes all the songs both as a suite and as separate pieces. “Weight Of The Sun” is indeed one of the very best songs of the year!

The album was produced by Worlds End producer client Chris "Frenchie Smith".
